You don't hear the Roman Catholic hierarchy saying much
about a woman Pope these days!
But there was one in the ninth century.
An English woman named Joan was the leading church scholar and she earned her way
to the top. However, she had to disguise herself as a man in order to do
it.
Did you know that for years after Joan, all new Popes had to be gender
tested by a junior cardinal who checked the new Pope's manhood by reaching up
through a hole cut in the bottom of the throne specifically for that purpose?
